Planetary Nebula Abell 31 (Sh2-290) 620 viewsAbell 31 is perhaps the largest planetary nebula. It has a larger apparent size than the Helix Nebula yet Benedict at al. (2009) using the HST found it to be 3 times further away at around 2000 light years. They used parallax to determine its distance. Biggest or not, this ancient planetary nebula is seriously faint!!!!!
Exposure: 7 hours over 3 nights. DR

Lost in M38364 viewsBrought to my attention by Andrew Robertson, who was struggling to see this faint planetary nebula just above M38. This image was subsequently posted on the Deep Sky Forum by Owen Brazell to see if anyone had succeeded visually and if so, with what aperture. So far no reported sightings - it's magnitude 18.9! Peculiar Galaxies Arp 1 and Arp 285 415 viewsOriginally published in 1966, The Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies is a catalogue of peculiar galaxies produced by Halton Arp. You would imagine that the first entry in his list, Arp 1, would be the most peculiar of all but not so. It is a perfectly regular face-on Sc type spiral (just above middle). Arp included it because he thought it was of low surface brightness. It is compared to the interacting pair Arp 285, NGC 2854 and 2856, (lower right) but these are the "peculiar" ones, not Arp 1. DR

Globular Cluster, C39337 viewsGlobular Cluster in the spiral galaxy M33 - see this month's newsletter for details. This is the full frame image with the 12 inch so only a fraction of the galaxy fits in. David R

Caldwell 9. Cave nebula25 viewsCaldwell 9 in Patrick Moor's catalogue is an emission nebula 2400 LY distant in Cepheus, imaged with a canon 200D & pier mounted 8" reflector on a EQ6 Pro mount. Guided with the Gerald made off axis guider. 2 1/4 hours Ha filter and 5 hours UHC. Bill C

Dwarf Planet, Eris329 viewsEris is the ninth most massive body known to orbit the Sun. Its mass is 27% greater than Pluto. At 96.4 astronomical units from the Sun, it is about three times further out than Pluto and pretty faint at magnitude 18.7. One moon has been discovered, Dysnomia. David R

Compact Galaxy Group, Hickson 93 277 viewsLocated within the Square of Pegasus, this compact group of 5 galaxies is centred on the distorted elliptical galaxy NGC 7550. Paul Hickson described this group as an accordant quartet with the 5th a background galaxy. David R.

Compact Galaxy Group, Hickson 94 268 viewsVery odd group with the central galaxies enveloped in an asymmetric "cloud". After a bit of digging it turns out Hickson got it wrong here and it is just an ordinary galaxy cluster. Distance around 550 million light years. David R.

Compact Galaxy Group, Hickson 99270 viewsNot one of the most spectacular of the Hickson groups with its brightest galaxy down at mag 14. It comprises 4 spirals and 1 elliptical but there are several galaxies around the group so it could be the case of a compact group at the centre of a loose cluster. David R

IC 1396 in Cepheus (Sh2-131)343 viewsAlthough generally referred to IC1396 the full nebula is probably more accurately called Sh2-131. The IC entry refers to a cluster with nebulosity which is really the central area only. Herschel's Garnet Star at the top. Pentax 300mm lens +Canon 40D.

Planetary Nebula, Jones 1286 viewsAlthough quite large this planetary nebula is extremely faint. Its age of 35,000 years makes it one of the oldest planetary nebula known so it has had plenty of time to fade away.
Exposures totalled 7 hours over 4 nights in November & December. DR

M 109 NGC 399287 viewsM109 is a barred spiral galaxy in Ursa Major. Approx 84 Ly distant. Nearly 5 hours exposure with a UHC clip filter.
Usual set up. Pier mounted EQ6 Pro & 8" reflector scope guided with the essential off axis guider made by Gerald.

Messier 29203 viewsSomewhat ignored Messier object which does look a bit like a small Pleiades. All is not what it seems though with 2 of the seven brightest stars not being cluster members. The blue one is a background giant and the "handle" star (top left) is a foreground object. Age 5 million years. David R.

M51168 viewsM51 also catalogued as NGC 5194 is in Canes Venatici and is merging with NGC 5195. Four & half hours exposure with a UHC clip filter. Off axis guided on a EQ6 pro mount

Bode's Galaxy, M81347 viewsIs it possible to image Arp's loop from light polluted Lancashire? After 6 hours worth of exposures over 3 nights then answer was just about yes. Because of it size I had to resort to a mosaic to fit it all in and even then I could have done with a bit more sky coverage. Arp's Loop is at the top (north) of my image and left of centre. David R
