Hickson 55 (VV172)244 viewsIn this famous chain of galaxies the faintest member, second from the top (north) has a much greater redshift than the rest of the group. Why do groups often seem to have an anomalous member? A solution proposed in 1995 was that the mass of the real group acts as a gravitational lens to magnify and brighten any background galaxy in the same line of sight. This would produce more apparent discordant redshift members than pure chance would provide. David R.

Caldwell 36 and X7 242 viewsX7 is an ultra-luminous x-ray source (ULX) located way out on the western edge of galaxy NGC4559 (Caldwell36). It is believed to be a large black hole swallowing material from a companion and its formation was probably triggered by an encounter with dwarf galaxy "g" shown in the insets. David R.

Open Cluster, NGC 559 225 viewsCassiopeia is full of spectacular open clusters but NGC 559 is probably not one of them! It is, however, an interesting cluster well worth searching out being relatively old and much reddened. Note the prominent white stars are most likely foreground objects and not part of the cluster. The Saturn Nebula245 viewsDiscovered by William Herschel in 1782 with his 18.7 inch telescope way down in Aquarius. He observed it several times at up to 932x magnification - don't try this at home! It was Lord Rosse who gave it its name - it is about the same size as Saturn and with those extensions either side does look a bit similar. David R

Sharpless Nebulae Sh2-254, 255, 256, 257 and 258183 viewsContinuing on the trail of the Sharpless nebulae this relatively unknown group in Orion caught my eye and with 5 objects for the price of one it was too good to miss.
3 hours H-alpha + 3 hours RGB.
