M33 Triangulum galaxy176 viewsM33 is 3rd largest galaxy in the local group and is nearly 3 million light years distant. I realised I'd imaged it in Oct 15 and Nov 16 giving over nine hours exposure in total. Here's the result of the two combined. Processed in iris and Photoshop. BillCFeb 11, 2018

Copeland's Septet270 viewsDiscovered by Copeland in 1874 using the 6 foot "Leviathan of Parsonstown" telescope at Birr Castle, Ireland. It was a fortuitous discovery as he was actually looking for another "nebula" but had been given the wrong coordinates. He could see 7 nebulae (galaxies) hence septet but there are at least 8 probably 9 associated together. Distance around 430 mly. David R.Oct 24, 2017

Hickson 55 (VV172)244 viewsIn this famous chain of galaxies the faintest member, second from the top (north) has a much greater redshift than the rest of the group. Why do groups often seem to have an anomalous member? A solution proposed in 1995 was that the mass of the real group acts as a gravitational lens to magnify and brighten any background galaxy in the same line of sight. This would produce more apparent discordant redshift members than pure chance would provide. David R.

The Owl and the Hickson269 viewsThe Owl Nebula has some faint companions - a galaxy just north of it, a small nebula just below it but faintest of all is Hickson Galaxy Group 50 to its left (east). This ring of 5 galaxies is the faintest of the Hickson groups and has the highest redshifts. Their light took 1.75 billion years to get to Lancashire. David RJun 18, 2017

Supernova339 viewsDavid R alerted me to the supernova in NGC 6946 which I'd imaged on 25 April. Imaged again last night and Hurriedly processed. No sign of the star in question. Bill CMay 25, 2017

A Spiral Nebula270 viewsA very odd emission nebula and possibly one of the most distant from the centre of the galaxy. The spiral shape is believed to result from the intense stellar wind from a Be supergiant star - the only known example of such a nebula in the galaxy. David RMay 24, 2017
