Discovered by Paulo Maffei, these two galaxies are heavily obscured behind the Milky Way. He used infra-red film and they are generally regarded as just about undetectable in the visible. Yet despite this, a 4 inch apo and Canon 60D has recorded them between the clouds this month. If we ever get a proper clear night I will try again but it never ceases to amaze me how deep a small refractor and DSLR can reach.
PS This image is straight out of Iris - just used colour stretch (ie arc sine hyperbolic).

Amazing that you can image this from behind the Milky way. How much exposure did you give it and did you use a H.A. filter? Bill C

Bill,
The filter was a UHC which transmits deep-red and is certainly the reason that the galaxies could be detected and also why they appeared pure red. An Ha filter would have been less good as it only passes a tiny part of the deep-red spectrum. The exposure was nominally 12 x 10 minutes over 3 nights but this is an over estimate as only 3 of the 12 were not seriously fogged by passing clouds.
