Last night's edition of BBC4's The Sky at Night was all about comets:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04dg5jq
covering the ESA Rosetta mission plus Pete Lawrence's guide on how to observe and photograph Comet Jacques.
It's repeated on Wednesday at 7:30pm.

I managed to see Comet Jacques for myself, low in the NE before dawn at the end of last month:

but it's now visible in the evening sky, so I'll be trying to image it once the weather improves...

Well last night I finally got some clear sky to have a go - but first I had to shift the green wheelie-bin out of the way, to make room to set up my tripod in a position where the comet wasn't behind the trees!

This comet is certainly zipping across the sky: by last night it had moved from Perseus into Cassiopeia - so it's now well above the tree-line from my back garden. But it's going so fast that it trails on exposures longer than a minute!

Despite the patchy cloud, I did some more imaging last night and made an animation of the session, after cutting out the frames which were obscured by the clouds (hence it's a bit jerky):

Last night was clearer, so I got an uninterrupted hour's data to make this animation:

This comet has faded considerably now, but I still managed to catch it in a set of three images from the BRT Galaxy Camera last night:

(I'd managed to get a sequence of three images by asking for exposure times of 12001, 12002 and 12003 milliseconds)

Remember that BAS Members can download FITS data and even add their own job requests to the BRT facility - email me for details.

Here's an updated image of the Comet from last Thursday, acquired via the BRT facility on Tenerife:

All the stars in this image are fainter than magnitude 10.

The vertical trailing of the stars shows the relative movement of the comet over the course of 13 minutes, but the horizontal trailing is due to unresolved issues with their Paramount.
