On display at this year's Kelling Heath Star Party was the brand new EQ8 mount from SkyWatcher. This is a serious bit of kit with a telescope payload of 50Kg and this Chinese made mount must have the big USA manufacturers worried.

It is about the size of a Paramount MX (their smaller mount) but it has a higher payload and is 1/3rd the cost. We were able to give it a close examination and the gear wheels look about 7 or 8-inch in diameter - that's twice the size of the EQ6. Large gear wheels are the easiest way to get smooth and accurate tracking. It is driven by stepper motors and appears to able to be run from EQMOD.

We also had a chat to an owner of one who seemed impressed but advised that there were teething issues. So sensibly wait for version 2 before splashing the cash (£2,500)

It certainly is a much more robust looking piece of kit. Thankfully they seem to have moved away from the horrific attitude bolts that strip the threads or become detached from the adjustment lug on EQ5 & EQ6 mounts.
Definitely a re-shuffle of the shopping list to accommodate the EQ8 - just don't let Michelle find out the price tag!!!

Found this website where a guy has stripped down the EQ8 (no his name is not Gerald!)
There are lots of detailed photos of the inner workings and quality looks impressive. He has also got the mount working with EQMOD. The advantage of EQMOD is that you are not reliant on proprietary specialist software to run it. The mount really does look a game changer.
