Reticle eyepiece with cross hairs

Post by bchamberlain » Sat Jul 20, 2013 7:57 pm

Opinions needed please. I've had my EQ5 mount set up on the pier for a while now but still can't achieve accurate polar alignment. Drift alignment seems to be the answer. Question is, is a reticle eyepiece with cross hairs needed? I don't mind the price if the use isn't a one off. Does it have other uses once alignment is done?. Which is the best focal length? Illuminated? Double cross hairs? Thanks for any advice. Bill.
PS Brian calibrated my polar scope so I know that will be right.

You could fit one of our webcams into your eyepiece-holder and use the laptop screen to monitor the star's drift - much more comfortable.
You can even bring up a cross-hair overlay in the WXAstrocapture and SharpCap programs to help.

Thanks Ross. I'll check with Dean to see what's available. Bill

Or if you have a DSLR with LiveView video output, you should be able to use that, so long as you can put a cross-hair overlay on the video display.

That's a good idea Ross. There's a grid display on the 7D which gives me a central point for alignment. Nice one. Bill
