Small telescopes on "whackery" tripods

#1 Post by rwilkinson » Wed Jan 16, 2013 11:49 am

At last night's star-party I encountered a number of new "last chance to buy" Jessop telescopes.

They gave decent views of Jupiter (and in one case we even got the M31 galaxy), but they were all let down by their really flimsy tripods and mounts. These made them awkward to point, and then any adjustment caused their images to wobble around like the proverbial "jelly on a plate"! :(
But when I took their owners over to look through Bill's "mini-Dobbo" table-top reflector:

there was no comparison - a much better viewing experience all round.

 So that set me wondering... surely it would be relatively easy to fashion a simple table-top Dobsonian mount to give these lightweight 'scopes a new lease of life?
Now I've got some bits of old laminated shelves in my shed, so I could have a go at a making a prototype...

As some lightweight tripods are "no better than junk", I thought that I could make a better solution out of junk:

I've added a couple of disks of PTFE between the "bearing" surfaces, and they run very smoothly now.
In use, it can stand on any convenient flat surface:

Fabulous piece of work Ross ;)

My little Dob mount with the 130P on it really works for me and it's always seems to attract some attention when we are out, I think yours will now take over :( Hopefully you have drawn up the plans and wood specs

You will have to try the new MAK David has obtained

Cheers

Bill
