Just after 4pm yesterday evening (13-Dec), I saw a very bright object low down in the SW - looking out of an upstaris window it was just above the roof of the house opposite. I thought that it could only be the planet Venus - and indeed it was.
So Venus will become increasingly prominent in the Western sky over the next few months. This is not a direction I can see from my garden, but still on a few occasions I have managed to catch it during daylight (when it's been further South, and the Sun has been behind the house to the West):
