Pentax Astrotracer Cameras

#1 Post by DRatledge » Mon Jul 25, 2011 4:52 pm

Sounds too good to be true but Pentax Japan have announced that their K-5 (and K-r?) cameras have built in star tracking. Just put the camera on an ordinary fixed tripod and it will track the stars!!!! Judging by the test images it works for 30 seconds with a 200mm lens and for 300 seconds with a 40mm lens.
Check out the Japanese link (auto translate so a bit jumbled English)

More details of the Pentax have become available. It is an additional clip-on GPS unit that does the clever work - it works out position and orientation so the camera knows which way to move the chip inside the camera to counteract the Earth's rotation. Cost around £200 when released.
