My 1st Capture of Saturn 16.03.2011

#1 Post by imartin » Fri Mar 18, 2011 8:55 pm

Hi all,

My first attempt at Saturn. The seeing was so, so but the transparency not so good.

Taken with SW 150P, Orion Shorty plus, flashed SPC880. 1200 frames taken and processed in Registax.

Thanks for looking.

Ian

Very nice Ian, that's very sharp :-)
Looking at your file-name, I guess that you took that at around 11:15pm? Saturn is quite low in the sky still at the moment, but will be getting better-placed over the next few weeks.

Now it looks like you could do with some more optical magnification - maybe worth trying an extension-tube of an inch or two between your Barlow Lens and the webcam, so that a larger image is projected onto the CCD?
I got one like this http://www.opticstar.com/Run/Astronomy/ ... 0_5_1_1_67 for a fiver at Kelling Heath (but I've lent it to Keith at the moment).
However I'm not sure if you'll have enough focus-travel on your Newtonian to accommodate this (there's plenty with an SCT) - maybe you could rig up a prototype jig with a cardboard tube to check first?

Don't forget that Keith and I will be hosting a session on observing and imaging Saturn at our 3-May meeting, so please come along then and share your experiences.
