I've been following Dean's recent experiments with his umodified SPC880: http://www.boltonastro.org.uk/Gallery/thumbnails.php?album=53
He's made a little bracket to mount the lenses from his Olympus (film) SLR onto his webcam, similar to this one I made for my TouCam:

which gives a field-of-view a few degrees across.

But with an unmodified camera, the limit is that the slowest exposure available is 1/25-sec - yet stacking a few hundred of these can get objects down to 7th-magnitude.

However we'll soon see the difference when he gets an LX-modified camera...

We did initially have problems trying to stack his raw images in IRIS - with the gain wound up full on his camera, the background noise was so high that the automatic Stellar registration couldn't pick out the stars for alignment. :-(
But the Setfindstar command can be used to change the threshold for star detection, and using lower values sorted out the problem. :-)
