As David mentioned in a recent meeting, it's now possible to buy "Chinese copies" of the digital electronic timers for Canon (and other) DSLRs for under £20.

Just go to eBay and put "canon timer" in the search box.
Then you can set a programmed number of exposures of the required duration, and then retire inside for a warm drink whilst your camera does the business outside in the cold!
But make sure that you get the right unit to fit your camera: there are two different types of plug to fit the cameras - a custom Canon connector or a standard 2.5mm stereo type (which also fits the Pentax).
