Meteor detection talk - Monday 24th

Post by rwilkinson » Sat Oct 22, 2016 8:13 am

There will be a talk on the detection of meteors by radio reflections at the Bolton Wireless Club on Monday evening (see details below). You don't need to be a BWC member: all visitors will be very welcome.

This technique was pioneeered by Bernard Lovell and others in the 1940s, which led in part to the development of the field of radio-astronomy. And it's something which you can do at home with relatively simple equipment (including some from our loans pool), to detect meteors when it's cloudy, or even during daylight.
And it's particularly relevant now, with the peak of this year's Leonids and Geminids showers coming up in the next couple of months, but coinciding with the Full Moons.

The BWC meets at the Britannia Hotel, which is only quarter of a mile from the BAS venue at Ladybridge: ... &Itemid=68
Note that the Hotel car-park has a remote-controlled barrier at the entrance: just buzz the reception and tell them that you are there for the Wireless Club meeting. Then the meeting will be in the Beaumont Suite on the ground-floor: turn right from the lobby, and go past the bar area and restaurant servery.
The talk will begin around 7:30pm.
Please bring along £1 as a visitor's fee, and another £1 if you'd like to take part in the raffle.
