I hope that those of you with reasonably portable instruments will be bringing them along to our session tomorrow evening?
I'll fetch my latest home-made gadget: a tablet-guided telescope!
This uses the Skeye app running on my Nexus7 fixed on a little platform beside my 70ED refractor on a simple alt-az tripod-mount.
Running in the indirect mode, I can synchronise it by calibrating on nearby stars, then it will help guide me to faint targets. I tried it out last week and quickly found M27 and then M81 & 82 on a none-too-dark night from the middle of town.
OK, it's not as accurate as a proper Go-To system, but it does have the advantages of no trailing wires, or fiddly hand-controls, plus the ability to move the tripod (accidentally or deliberately) without losing your place. And you don't even need to know the names of the calibration stars, so long as you can match the constellation patterns between the sky and the tablet!
And I'll also be wearing my Treasurer's hat, ready to collect any subsctiption renewals (or new memberships).
