The Society has been invited to a lecture at Bolton School on the 13th October. This clashed with our own meeting so that has now been re-arranged for the Spring and we are free to attend the Bolton School talk. There is car parking at the school (access Dobson Road) and it is suggested we arrive between 5:00 and 5:10pm. Details of the talk are below. Hope to see you there as this is too good to miss!

NW Physics Guest Lecture – Galaxy Clusters in the Universe - sponsored by the Ogden Trust
A free event
Galaxy clusters are the largest stable objects that we know of, consisting of hundreds or thousands of galaxies. The physics of galaxy clusters is dominated by gravitational interaction of dark matter and studying the formation of these colossal objects provides a unique testing ground for theories of dark matter, gravity and the early universe. Our investigation of galaxy clusters relies upon two key approaches: simulating the Universe and observing the structures we see around us. This talk will discuss the ingredients required to simulate a galaxy cluster, and what these simulations tell us about the nature of dark matter and the evolution of the Universe.
Delivered by Monique Henson
About Monique: “I'm a PhD student working with Dr. Scott Kay for Manchester University’s Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. My interests largely relate to the formation of large scale structure and how we can model that using numerical simulations”
Who: Years 10-13 and adults
When: 13th October 2015
Time: 5.15pm - 6.45pm
Where: Bolton School – Arts Centre (tea and coffee will be served)
