Hi all,
just floating this so dont shoot me, is it worth changing the format of tonight's meeting to a practical demo of a portable setup seeing as the weather looks like it'll play ball?
It'd be a crime to waste a night stuck inside if the bright points of light are poking through the haze & gloom of the Bolton skies???

Open to be shot down in flames now!!!!

Cheers
Andy

It's really down to the person who is presenting on the evening! But I can't believe that Dave Walker hasn't considered tonight's weather.

I'm putting my little DOB in just in case as this could be termed as portable :?

I am however keen to see the vixen polarie star tracker Dave uses and some tips on focusing with a DLSR (I'm rubbish) I'm sure Dave won't miss a chance of some real practical work

See you all later

The clue being in the title of 'portable setup' it implies (does it not) that its a grab n go setup - to account for such rare events as a clear night!!!
The redoubtable Mr Walker surely will rock up geared for an outdoor event!

The thing with the 'Mobile Setup' is that it is tiny.

Remember me crawling down on the floor at the last star party? Kinda tricky to huddle everybody around, although a practical demo is certainly possible. But you want to be looking up, not down!

The mobile setup is a photographic thing, and the moon is up tonight, covering the most gorgeous thing in the sky - Orion. Gaah! So if you're into Deep Sky, then tonight is actually a washout anyway. That's muphy's law for you! It seems like it is always clear when the moon is out, and cloudy when it's not.

I've got 42 slides, aimed at every level, but the folk who might be most interested will be the DSLR crew. I understand that things like the moon don't matter so much to the Visual stargazer and Planet watcher.

If we can take the projector outside maybe, do we have a screen? Maybe run it like a star party, with a side show? Or do you want to re-schedule the Mobile thing for another time?

Or will there not be enough time to get folk down with their telescopes? Would be daft to try have a star party with just me and a DSLR crawling about on the floor...

I'm easy either way.

Just had a chat with Carl, and floated the idea of a kinda star party with side-show, apparently Dean has a screen, so we might be able to do it if there are other scopes there also
- but not the Big Bolton telescope, that isn't really all that mobile...

Dean, is that a go-er?
