Last night's The Sky At Night (including Sir Patrick's last appearance  ) gave some useful tips for what instruction we'll need to do on Tuesday.

Hopefully some of our novices will bring along their kit for us to work with, but just in case we're short of hardware, it would be useful if a few of our more experienced members could bring some stuff too - a small Dobsonian, an alt-az GoTo mount and couple of EQ mounts (with and without GoTo).
:!: And if it's cloudy but not too cold (or snowing!), I can set up my "artificial star" at the opposite end of the car-park, for target-finding practice.

We'll be trying something a little different for tonight's meeting...

Instead of setting up the room as a "lecture theatre" and watching yet another slide-show, this will be a completely interactive session where we'll turn over the entire floor-space to set up various telescopes which we can congregate around in small "focus-groups"
We've already had a number of email enquiries from novices who want to come along and learn how to set up and use their new 'scopes - just like in the recent Sky At Night (but indoors in the warm!). So we hope that this format will provide an excellent opportunity for the transfer of knowledge, expertise and useful hints & tips from the more experienced telescope users to the novices.

Then if it stays clear we can even set up the 'scopes outside and have a look at Jupiter.
And we hope to have the BIG Bolton Telescope (and its Stairway to the Heavens) set up too.

I heard from the LCC caretaker yesterday that the roads were OK (Armadale Road and Beaumont Drive have been well-gritted), but the car-parks are quite icy, so please take care (particularly when carrying delicate equipment in around).

All,
It's looking clear for tonight but minus plenty so make sure you have your thermals on!
Jupiter through the 16 inch BBT should be spectacular! Not to be missed.

I'm going to attempt projecting the moon and/or Jupiter onto our large screen through my c8, so that should be 'interesting'........

What a brilliant evening - certainly our most successful "activity night" to date - which was a great introduction to our six newest Members, and another seven visitors! :D

There must have been at least a dozen 'scopes set up, including the BBT

File comment: "Now that's magic!" says Ian as he's one of the first to look at the Moon trough the BBT.

And we helped several newcomers with their new 'scopes - including five new Jessops reflectors - to see Jupiter (and in one case M31 too) through their new acquisitions.

Meanwhile, thanks to a technical tour de force, Dean and Dave Walker were demonstrating their "mobile" planetary and deep-sky imaging systems. Here's the image which Dave took:
