As David mentioned on Tuesday we have been invited to take part in this local carnival event in Moses Gate Country Park later this month.
We can have a pitch on which to set up our gazebo (and new banner!) plus a couple of solar-viewing telescopes, and it's an opportunity to publicise the Society, and maybe gain a few new members.
But it's only worth going if we get some decent weather (some chance of viewing the Sun!) and have a few BAS Members prepared to come down for the day and man the stand. And if you can donate any unwanted old astro magazines, it's useful to be able to give them away to interested parties.

So if you're interested in coming along, please post a reply to this topic.

I've found some pictures from the 2008 event which give a flavour of what it's like - as you can see, it's a fun day out 8-) :

Hi Ross

Count me in if you need some help. I could also bring some kit down if you required some more, if not a scope a battery pack might be useful, no too sure about the shorts though :lol:

Weather depending, it looks we have a green light for Moses and I have two car passes

Unloading of cars can take place between 9am - 11:00. We have to arrive no later than 11am, Post code for the main entrance is BL3 2PZ

What time do we want to meet up at the main entrance? I was thinking 10:15. We then have time to unload and move the cars and then set-up the stall.

Remember for those that want to leave before 5:15 you will need to park your car in one of the public car parks

Anyone have any thoughts

Regards

Carl

Count me in, I have kept the day free and I can be there any time to help with the setting up and manning the stall if required

Is there anything you need other than some good weather

I've just spoken with our Chairman, and agreed that we should go for it, so long as the weather on the day gives us some prospects of seeing the Sun (we'll update on Saturday night).

We're not sure if there will be different vehicle entrances for Exhibitors and Public, so we're going to meet up off-site first to transfer all the heavy stuff into two vehicles (as we have two passes) and then drive down there in convoy.
I suggested that we use the car-park outside the Maplin shop on Manchester Road (BL2 1HQ) as a convenient rendezvous: be there ready to leave at 10am.

Now David has the gazebo, and I have the Coronado60 'scope and Vixen Sphinx mount (and a battery) and Dean will provide our banner.
We'll also need the following:
  • one or two of portable tables, and some folding chairs;
  • any unwanted old astro magazines (to give away to interested visitors);
  • any other props or demos which could be of interest - maybe a small 'scope with a Baader AstroSolar filter?
Please reply if you have any of these which you can bring?

P.S. If you're heading into Bolton from the West on Sunday, be advised that there will be some road closures between Horwich and Bolton (particularly Chorley New Road) due to the IronMan UK Triathlon event: http://www.bolton.gov.uk/website/news/Pages/RoadclosuresforIronmanevents.aspx

So far we've got David, myself, Carl, Bill, Lee and maybe Dean - anyone else fancy coming down and joining us, for part of the day at least?

Just had word from Gerald and Brian that they too will be attending on Sunday. Anybody else is welcome - the more the merrier!

I will be there on Sunday. What time should I arrive, as I will probably be as much use as a chocolate fire guard where the telescopes are concerned ! :?
