Three comets in two nights!

#1 Post by rwilkinson » Sat Mar 25, 2017 9:28 am

On Thursday evening I tried to capture C/2016 VZ18 (PanSTARRS), but although I got a lot of images, it's so faint and fast-moving that I wasn't able to pick it out from among the trails of the background stars.
But last night I was much more successful. I first aimed at 41P/Tuttle-Giacobinni-Kresak, which was very high up in Ursa Major. This is also moving quite quiclkly at the moment, but is much brighter, although large and diffuse, so I used my StarWave 80ED 'scope and HX916 camera (which give a much larger field of view than the C8/MX716 combination.

Then by 10:30pm another target was just appearing above the trees: C/2015 V2 (Johnson) (in Hercules). This is fainter, but very slow-moving and is showing a tail at last:
