This afternoon I took a break from gardening to have a look at the Sun through our H-alpha telescope. I could see a few filaments and one very large prominence, so I had a go at capturing an image through the hazy cloud with our webcam:As the 8-bit camera has a limited dynamic range (only 256 levels), I needed to record a pair of 250-frame .AVI sequences: one with the camera gain set low to capture the detail on the disk and the other in high-gain mode to get the faint prominences. I'd used the camera in monochrome mode, so in IRIS I loaded the disk image into the Green field and the prominences into the Red (and turned off the Blue) to get this "creme brule" colour effect.
