Hi all, whilst browsing the www.dpreview.com website as I frequently do for all things camera related I came across a video lecture by Robert Hurt who is a NASA visualisation artist (false colour and all that). A fascinating 20 minutes worth about the whole radio/visual spectrum and the satellites which image it.

Thanks Eb - definitely worth watching.

If you fancy trying the arcsinh stretch he talks about then it might be a surprise but you have probably already used it! It is in IRIS but is called Colour Stretch - a bit easier to say than arc sine hyperbolic. It's the same - it was "borrowed" from NASA.

The software he shows is Fits Liberator - free from NASA. It used to be an add in for Photoshop but is now standalone. It's a bit of a one trick pony and after the stretch relies on exporting to Photoshop.

Hi Dave,
I have tried to get to grips with IRIS (honestly) but I fall down on using its stretching tools and my colours from a DSLR always come out inverted and I can't get to the bottom of it.
I've also played with FITS Liberator with some success but I keep going back to Photoshop which has served me well for ages since it was called Aldous Photostyler back in 1991. Nik Szymanek's book has been pretty helpful for me with his handling of PS routines.
Cheers for now,
Eb
