The US team using the BICEP2 telescope at the South Pole is reporting today stunning evidence for the established model of the big bang followed by inflation. What they seem to have measured is gravitational waves from inflation.

At the moment most of the websites seem overloaded with hits as everyone tries to find out the details. However this appears to be the first proof that inflation really did occur - ie within the first second of the big bang the universe expanded exponentially. Inflation was first proposed by Alan Guth but proof has been long coming.

If true then this is a sensational result. If you doubted the big bang then it's probably time to reconsider!

David,
We will have to tell Roy that his explanation for the Big Bang is wrong :D

This is an excellent initial explanation of what the BICEP2 result would mean if confirmed - pretty mind blowing for both astronomy and physics.
