Three views of comet 174P/Echeclus

Post by rwilkinson » Sat Dec 16, 2017 11:20 am

This comet seems unusually prone to outbursts, where it suddenly becomes much brighter than usual (probably due to outgassing of volatiles). This can be seen from the light-curve on Seiichi Yoshida's web-page: http://www.aerith.net/comet/catalog/0174P/2000EC98.html

This week, after reading that it had flared up again, I managed to get an image from New Mexico:

The comet from New Mexico on the morning of 15-Dec (our time). 2x 170-sec with 250mm f/3.4 refractor.

And then as it's high in our evening sky (in Pisces), I was also able to catch it from Bolton:

The comet from Bolton that same evening. 31x 90-sec with MX716 on C8 at f/3.3.

This comet is moving so slowly across the sky that it appears against the same star-field in both images, taken around twelve hours apart.
And I'm gratified to see that I've picked up a similar number of the background stars from Bolton as I did from New Mexico (albeit with an integrated exposure time eight times longer).

Then a couple of hours later, the request which I'd placed on the COAST job-queue two days before ran too:

The comet later the same evening, this time from Tenerife. 3x 150-sec using C14 at f/10.

A couple of weeks later it appears to have got larger but more diffuse:

That "outburst" material from a few weeks back still seems to be spreading, and so becoming even fainter:
