A busy night for Perseids

Following on from my visual observations on Saturday night (viewtopic.php?f=18&t=951), and having watched The Sky At Night feature on detecting meteors by radar echoes, I set up a receiver and left it running overnight.

When I checked this morning it had picked up dozens of strong echoes, including these around 2:45am BST:

The radio signals are converted into audible "pings" which are displayed in this 3D spectrogram. The left-to-right axis is frequency, the right-to-left axis is time (covering about 8 minutes) and the vertical axis is signal strength (and the brighter the colour the stronger the signal). Some of the signals are widely spread in frequency due to the Doppler-shift.

I shall be doing a more detailed write-up in a future edition of The Bolton Astronomer.

I've had a look though my sequence of screen-caputres and counted 350 meteor detections between 11pm on Sunday and 9:20am on Monday!

A busy night for Draconids too!

Last night I set up the meteor-detector system again, to catch the peak of the Draconids shower.
I've just been through the logs, and counted 352 echoes over the course of 18 hours:

kept looking out for these most of the night but was too cloudy
