Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova

#1 Post by rwilkinson » Fri Feb 10, 2017 1:52 pm

This is the comet which appeared briefly in the evening twilight at the start of January, and which Dave Walker managed to catch from his 5th-floor window (see the February issue of The Bolton Astronomer).
Well it's now rather brighter, and moving rapidly across the morning sky.
Frustrated by the run of cloudy weather here, I've used a remote telescope in the New Mexico desert to get an image:

It's obviously a very fast-moving blur: the star-trails show how far it moved during each exposure of 150-sec!

After ten weeks' wait, I finally got my chance to find this comet from Bolton.
But it was close to the bright Full Moon, so it was really tricky to find: I had to use my new "invisible comet detector" software (more on this in our April newsletter!).

I got a better view of it last night. Although the sky was quite hazy, at least there was no Moonlight.
