Did anyone see any of the lunar eclipse last night - I guess that its timing in the wee small hours would have put off all but the most dedicated observers?

I certainly didn't fancy getting up and setting up my gear outside at that time, and my East-facing window is on the wrong side of the house to observe this event from indoors. However I'd fixed one of my webcams to the plastic gutter above my bedroom window:

File comment: My Philips TouCam webcam mounted on the gutter. I only needed a short extension on the USB lead to reach to my netbook on the windowsill.

Using this, at least I could catch the first part of the event, looking West over the roof. 8-)

So here is my time-lapse video, captured at one frame per minute:

The brief "occultation" early in this sequence is due to the TV aerial mast on our neighbours' chimney!

In fact I happened to wake up just after 3am, at which time I adjusted the gain and managed to capture a single frame just before the Moon "set" behind our ridge-tiles:

Then I had a quick look out of one of the front windows and saw a pale reddish-brown coloured lunar disk, just as the total phase started.

I managed to stay awake until 3.30am and went out with my hand held Lumix camera. Although I remember the last lunar eclipse I am sure it was at a better time, it still is something to witness and enjoy.

The ioptron tracker probably wasn't needed but it was set up anyway. I thought there was a huge difference between visual and photo. Note the stars appearing.

Great shot, Bill!
And I bet that the warmth of your "telly-tubby" suit was most welcome at 3:30am?
