Observing Mars this winter

#1 Post by rwilkinson » Mon Dec 14, 2009 1:20 pm

I saw Mars for the first time this year on Saturday night - low down in the East (and behind some trees!) around 10:30pm.
As it approaches opposition at the start of February, it will rise earlier and get progressively brighter and higher in the sky, but it never gets larger than 14 arc-sec this time, so surface detail will be very difficult to resolve.
But on a larger scale, it will pass close to the M44 "Beehive" cluster at the start of February, which should make a pleasing image?
