Hi all.
I will use this forum topic to post regular updates of times and whereabouts of the international space station and shuttle (when its up) and some other common satellites. I will try my best to keep them updated but if you would like to know the times and whereabout for a specific evening then feel free to email me and i will email the data directly to you.
The data comes from an app on my iphone called go satwatch and up to now has been very accurate and has enabled me to spot the iss and shuttle on many occasions enabling me to have camera ready to catch the shot.....

Thanks Dean :-)

Other sources for local satellite predictions are the Heavens Above website:
http://www.heavens-above.com/allsats.asp?Mag=3.5&lat=53.572&lng=-2.430&loc=Bolton&alt=76&tz=GMT

That runs in a web-browser (and so needs a live interntet link) - alternatively you can install an application such as WinOrbit http://www.sat-net.com/winorbit/
or Orbitron http://www.stoff.pl/
onto your PC (but you need to keep these updated with the latest Keplerian elements at least once a week).

There's more information in my talk from 1-Mar (soon to be available for download in our Members' Area).

I saw an ISS pass around 18:40 on Saturday evening entirely by chance - I only went out to see if the clouds were clearing, and there it was passing through Orion!

But my neighbour Colin was better-prepared, and took this picture of it just using a DSLR with its own lens, fixed on a static tripod:
Attachment:
File comment: An ISS pass through Orion, as seen from central Bolton on 26-Feb-2011. Pictured by Colin Guy using Canon EOS 40D: 39-sec at ISO 400. Note how the low clouds had moved South during the exposure.

Hiya all,
sorry have let this lapse over last few days but the iss is only visible in the very early hours of morning at the moment and I for one would rather wait for the evening passes ......however, if anyone would like the data for the passes at the moment even though they are at stupid o'clock in the morning then let me know and I will certainly be happy to post them again....... other than that I will restart the posts when the iss is visible in the evenings again ....

I've seen it twice this week.

Over the weekend I was staying with some friends in the Wye Valley, and when I loaded the Stellarium program onto their laptop it predicted an overhead ISS pass a few minutes later. We went out to look but saw nothing, and I later discovered that the PC's firewall had prevented it from downloading the latest orbital parameters, so it's prediction was based on data from last September!
Having sorted that, we saw it the following evening, and from their latitude of 51 degrees it went directly overhead (altitude 87 degrees).

Then last night, coming out of a meeting at 10:20 I saw it by chance in the Western sky.
